San Elijo Lagoon is primarily a shallow-water estuary. It is divided into basins by Highway 101, the railway, and Interstate 5.

About the Area:
 

Area description and history-
Public access to the beach is available by way of stairs in 3 different locations. There are boutiques, casual restaurants, surf shops, and service businesses dot the coast highway. The Cedros Design District in Solana Beach won an architectural Orchid award for planning - The station building is of a very unique architecture style and was opened on February 24, 1995. It was designed by the award winning architect Robert Quigley.

North County’s premier night spot, the legendary Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach has had a long history of bringing great live music to the San Diego area. The Belly Up has been voted “San Diego’s Best Live Music Venue” numerous times.

For a 10 year period between 1950 and 1960, the community underwent tremendous growth. The Bill Jack plant (1949) introduced industry into the area and private contractors built a number of homes. Lomas Santa Fe completed their golf course and opened the sale of lots in Isla Verde in 1968. This signaled the beginning of a real estate boom which lasted well into the 80's and 90's. After a brief interval in the mid 90's, real estate sales were once again on the rise. As the community progressed additional emphasis was placed on beautification.

The Solana Beach Women's Civic Club gave the town a positive identity with the renovation of the plaza and installation of the "Sun Burst Fountain". They were also instrumental in the removal of numerous billboards along Highway 101 (replacing them with trees), and installing welcome signs at City entry-points. In 1986 Solana Beach incorporated.
